My dog's penis is stuck out. What should I do before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 8.3 lbs

We have been trying to get Cash’s penis in for over an hour now. He has had these issues a lot where it gets stuck but usually we eventually are able to get it in per vet’s recommendations. We’ve tried lube &rolling it down, cold compress, spray water. We don’t want to have to go to ER again. Any tips in order to get it in?? He doesn’t seem to be in discomfort or at least bad enough that we can tell. Or does it look like we have to go to ER??

Sometimes you have to exposure more to get it back in. Apply more lube ( sometimes I use karo syrup as this helps with swelling and a lubricant) and push the base of the penis forward and the skin backwards to expose it more. This can help spread the Lube and add more visual so you can see where the hang up is. from there try to pull the skin back around the penis. Sometimes it helps to grab each side at the tip of the skin and pull over. If it does not go in, your options are to make sure he can still urinate and make sure it stays moist or go to the ER. As long as as you keep it moist so it can’t dry out then you can wait unless there is swelling or trouble urinating
