My dog has a sudden fluid-filled lump on his back. Is it a bug bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 12 years old

I just noticed a palm-sized lump on my dachshund’s back (between shoulder blades), and it almost feels fluid filled. He is walking fine. It is not painful to him when we touch it and it was not there earlier today. Could this be a bug bite??

Insect bites don't typically cause fluid filled areas like this. I am concerned this area may be edema (fluid filled sac) or even emphysema (air filled sac). This area needs to be investigated by your vet to determine the underlying cause. I hope that Max's mysterious swelling resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.
