Why does my cat pee on clothes in one room, avoiding his covered box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 23 days old | 13.6 lbs

Hi. My cat were peeing on clothes in a room. But he doesn't pee at other rooms. Or other clothes. Only that room. Now we are keeping that room closed. When he has to pee he goes in front of the room and meows. He has a closed toilet and if i take off the top part he sees the litter and he will go in. But if i don't he doesn't go in. So i help him when he needs to pee. We don't know where he pees when we are not at home. He doesn't have a problem with pooping. He uses his toilet. Thanks.

I am sorry that your cat is having this issue. I would recommend keeping the lid off the litter box at all times. Some cats like litter boxes that are covered while other cats like them when they are not covered. I would also recommend adding in another litter box since it is ideal to have however many cats you have plus one in your house. I also recommend cleaning the litter box at least once a day. Making sure there is a litter box on each floor so that way your cat doesn't have to go to another level of the house to go to the bathroom. After this is he is still urinating outside the box I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to make sure he does not have a urinary tract infection.
