My senior dog has severe anxiety, destroying our home. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

We have an 11 year old dog with massive anxiety issues. We have not slept all week due to his anxiety. We have tried leashing him at night so he won't try to rip through our doors. Instead he has chewed through bedding, gouged holes in walls and woodwork. We have tried benadryl to no effect. Help, we are at the end of our rope! These are photos from last night's damage.

Poor Beau! Do you have any idea why he has such anxiety? I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian ASAP. There are a number of anti-anxiety medications that we commonly use that will work very quickly, so you can get a good night sleep. Then you can work on figuring out what is causing the anxiety and what to do about it long term. There are also long term anti-anxiety medications if needed. Unfortunately, I doubt there are any over the counter medications that will work, so I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian about a prescription anti-anxiety medication. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
