My kittens play rough. Are scratches during play normal or escalating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 19 days old | 2.1 lbs

Hello-my kittens are 3 and 7 months apart. They are rough playing all the time. (I just got the 7 month old a week ago.) I closely supervise them and they absolutely love to play with one another and know its not fighting. I did however just stumble upon a couple of scratches on the 3 month old's head. Is it normal for these kitten to grt little cuts/scratches during rough play or is this "play" escalating and I just did not realize it? Thanks

Kittens will play rough with each other and will sometimes scratch one another. Since they are still new to each other and getting to know each other, I would just keep an eye on their play so you can step in if they get too rambunctious. Also, play with them yourself, with a wand toy or offer a stuffed animal for them to use as a kick toy. A stuffed toy about the same size will allow them to kick as hard as they want without hurting anyone or themselves.
