Why does my new rescue puppy have such bad breath? How to fix it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

I have a little puppy that weighs about 4 to 5 pounds, he is a rescue so I'm not exactly sure of his age, he looks like he has a lot of pit on him, maybe American pitbull. My question is why does his breath smell so bad? He has black on his top gums where his bottom canines rest, also is there any way to help his breath not smell so bad?

He may have eaten something he should not have. make sure you check his teeth and on the roof of this mouth to make sure there is not a stick stuck somewhere that is causing an infection. If everything looks normal and he is eating well, it may be puppy breath. Puppies have a different odor and you either love it or hate it. If it is this, it will go away with time as he get larger.
