HELP!! What I thought was a skin allergy causing Buddy's itching , is FLEAS. My dogs have never had fleas, but since we moved to Florida little over 2 years ago, is when I have noticed the skin issues on Buddy. I took it for granted that the itching both Buddy my yorkiepoo and Chloe , my yorkie, was not fleas. I called the vet and got them started on flea med, but I'm concerned about the furniture, bedding ect. Is there anything else I should be doing to get rid of these fleas Thank you

There are a variety of products you can purchase at the pet store to use on furniture and floors. Talk to an employee about which products work the best. Also make sure to adhere to the guidelines surrounding the use of the product. You will need to remove the dogs from the house generally for a few hours. My advice would be to do a lot of laundry and vacuum/sweep everything you can including the areas where the dogs sleep. Do this every other day and make sure to empty the vacuum in the outside bins. It will take 6 months before your fully get rid of the fleas. best of luck!

Fleas and allergies to fleas can set-up an environment for infection and make the skin red, crusty and have hair loss. The skin will often start to heal once the fleas are gone, but it's worth treating for infection by giving a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (can get this at the pet store). It's best to give a bath with the medicated shampoo once every 3 days, until the skin starts to look normal. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas can reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. Below is a link to a short article that explains treating the dogs and environment for fleas. Fleas prefer dark places to leave their eggs, so keep that in mind when you are cleaning the environment. https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas/ If the skin problems are not getting better, or are getting worse in the next two weeks, then it's best to have your dogs evaluated by a vet, because they may need additional treatment. I hope that helps and they get better soon.
