What causes my pitbull mix's itchy skin, hot spots, and hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 80 lbs

I have 3 dogs and my over weight pitbull mix has skin inflammation, itchy skin, hot spots and hair loss but my other 2 dogs do not have any skin problems. What's wrong with my pitbull mix?

It sounds like Luna may have allergies. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to have her evaluated. They can dispense medications to help Luna heal fast and feel better. There are multiple new types of medications for dogs with allergies. There are daily medications (Apoquel) to monthly injections (cytopoint). You can also discuss with your veterinarian about different anti-histamines that can help. If her skin is that bad I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian since she may need antibiotics and shampoos to get rid of any infection. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
