My small dog swallowed a turkey bone. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 3 days old | 6 lbs

Hello! My dog swallowed a small turkey bone. What should I do? Should I be worried? Is there any possibility that it will simply pass through his stools? I am so worried... please let me know what I should do to prevent worse symptoms. He is a small dog by the way, which is why I am even more worried about him swallowing this bone.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the bone was small and cooked it is very likely that the acids in the stomach will break down the bone and he will pass bony flecks in his stool. If you are super worried you can have your Vet take an X-ray and decide if they thing it is too big. Just watch for vomiting, lethargy or not wanting to eat. I do not recommend inducing vomiting because the bone could get stuck in the esophagus on the way back up. I hope this helps and I wish Gordon the best!
