New puppy has ringworm: Is it safe to bring home? Long-term issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Scottish Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 6 days old | 3 lbs

I am supposed to get a Scottish terrier puppy in 2 weeks. The breeder called us Monday to say the litter has ringworm. Her vet has them on oral meds (griseofulvn) and antifungal topical/bathing routines. My worries are any long term effects. Liver damage, bald spots. What questions or requests do I need to make to protect my family and ensure I'm getting a healthy puppy. Or do I just need to walk away.

There won't be any longer term effects from ringworm. Her fur will grow back, and it is very unlikely she will have any liver damage. Treatment will clear it up. The puppy will be contagious for about three weeks if treatment is aggressive, so if you do have any other pets in the house, I would keep the puppy isolated for another week after getting her home to be safe. There's no need to walk away, lots of animals get ringworm and are just fine :-)
