Hi there, my 2.5 year old chihuahua mix started showing a raised spot on his snout last night. It spread and his whole snout became swollen. I gave him 10 mg of Benadryl and went to bed. This morning the right area is still raised and the snout is still swollen. Any idea what it could be? My neighbor has been walking him for me and she says she brings him into her house, but hasn't noticed anything unusual. Thanks

You're right that a swollen snout is often a sign of an allergic reaction to something. Sam may have been stung or bitten by some type of insect, or could be having an allergic reaction to something in the environment. Since the swelling did not resolve with Benadryl, I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. If this is an allergic reaction, he will likely need injectable steroids to treat it and may also need antibiotics or other medication depending on what is found on exam.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. That definitely looks like an allergic reaction, and giving Benadryl was a good idea. I'm not sure how much you gave, but you can give 1 mg per pound of body weight every 6-8 hours as needed for the swelling. As long as Flynn is not having any difficulty breathing and is otherwise acting OK, I recommend monitoring him closely for the swelling to decrease. You can also try gently massaging his muzzle to try to encourage the swelling to go down. If Flynn's swelling worsens or he has difficulty breathing or begins vomiting, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. (As a reminder, NEVER give dogs pain medications that are intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs). I hope this is helpful!
