My puppy has an itchy allergic rash. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 1 day old

Just found out that my 6 month old pit bull puppy is allergic to Jute and she's been playing on one all month. She's covered from head to paw in a red itch rash that won't let up. We reomoved the rug last week. Her sneezing is down but the rash is still dry and flaking from constant scratching. Besides oatmeal baths, coconut oil rubs and Benadryl how else can I help her feel better and heal?

If the home remedies that you are using are not wokring than she probably needs prescription medications. Talk to your vet about prescribing a corticosteroid (prednisone) which should take the itch away and clear up the red rash. She may also need an antibiotic, if she has a secondary bacterial skin infection. Your veterinarian should be able to tell after he/she examines her skin. Hope she feels better soon!
