My dog has a raised scab after finding a tick. Is it a normal bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 40 lbs

Yesterday we found a tick on the floor right next to our dog. We felt around his whole body to make sure there weren't more, and we found a big, raised scab below his ear. I assume this is a tick bite. Is this what they normally look like? The tick we found was definitely a dog tick. He is allergic to his flea and tick medication but we live in a cold climate so normally he would stop receiving it after September anyway.

It certainly could be a tick bite. Usually though, they leave no marks. It would have had to been embedded very deeply or attached for an extended period of time to cause that kind of reaction. It is also possible that this lesion is so reactive because Scruffy is an "allergic" dog to other things. Regardless of all of that I don't think I would be overly concerned unless he starts to feel unwell or if the lesion does not seem to be healing. For now just keep the wound clean (do not use peroxide) and then you can apply Neopsorin or other type of topical antibiotic ointment. I also suggest you speak to your vet about what tick-borne disease are prevalent in your area and if/when you should have Scruffy tested for any of them. Best wishes.
