My kitten isn't drinking after surgery. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 29 days old | 4 lbs

Our 6 month old male kitten is status post declaw and neuter 5 days and is resting and has a slightly decreased appetite but we don’t see him drinking since he is no longer in pain meds, he only meows as if something may be sore when we pick him up so he don’t jump, he has been going in his litter box but I worry with him not drinking enough

I would call your veterinarian tomorrow and see if they can dispense more pain medication if he is not eating as much. If he is eating wet food I wouldn't worry too much about him not drinking as well but if he is not then I would try to give I'm some wet food to introduce some water. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
