Dog has fleas, severe itching, thin hair, and irritated skin. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 8 days old | 60 lbs

2 months ago the family came back from a walk full of chiggers. Shortly after, Skillet started itching very bad. Then he got an infestation of fleas. We had him dipped and used advantage, but nothing seems to help. His hair is very thin and his skin is irritated. What can you recommend?

I hate to hear that ALL of you guys were itchy! I would recommend to use a new oral flea product called Simparica. It has the fastest kill time on the market and most dogs will eat it well. You will need to use it for a solid 6 months before all the fleas are finally killed. Watch out for tapeworm (as they are spread by fleas) and if Skillet is very itchy, a course of a drug called Apoquel will make him much more comfortable. Thank you for using Pet Coach!
