My dog scoots, has soft stool, and drags her tail. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is staying cooting and has soft stool? I checked tail and there is nothing, but when she’s walking she’s dragging tail on the floor. Not sure what’s going on? Thank you

It is likely that your dog has an irritated rectum or her anal glands are full. You can try to feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato to see if this helps with the diarrhea. However, if the scooting or diarrhea continues she will need to see a veterinarian to determine if she needs medication or her anal glands expressed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best of luck to you and your dog!
