My cat is scooting and has black bits. Is it flea dirt or glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered

Basically I am concerned for my cat as I think he might have flea dirt, could you please tell me if this is life threatening as I defintely do not want to lose him. Also he has been scooting across the floor for a while now we took him to a local vets and the vet said because he was done his glands may have became blocked and full and they would have to operate on him but to be honest they said that the operation could make Olly worse and we have only just noticed black bits in his fur.

Hi! No, flea dirt isn’t life threatening but he will need flea treatment and a bath. For anal glands I would try Adding some fiber to his diet, possibly with some canned pumpkin if he’ll eat it or you could try adding some sweet potato. This will help the anal glands expresson their own. I would start there but if these problems continue I would recommend him see your veterinarian. Best wishes!
