Why was my cat open-mouth panting and breathing fast, now better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

lo, About 2 nights ago I came home late at night to my cat rapidly breathing and open mouth panting, because of the time of night all I could do was lay with him and try to make him comfortable. He has had no prior issues or medical problems. The next morning he seemed a little better so i held off on the vet, no more panting but his breathing was still a little rapid. Now today his breathing is still a little elevated but closer to normal. I'm just wondering what could possibly be going on

Any time a cat is open mouth breathing or breathing hard or fast it is an emergency. Usually this is a serious condition. It can be from allergies and asthma, heart disease or cancer. The fact he has gotten better is a sign it my be more allergy induced. I would strongly recommend an exam by the vet and possibily and xray as most of these require medicines to manage them
