My cat lost his meow, tired, not eating, coughing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has lost his voice. He is also less energetic than usual, less interested in food, and occasionally seems to cough or gag a little. What could cause this, and what can I do for him?

I would recommend that your cat get checked out by a vet. Coughing or gagging and a loss of meow can indicate damage to the vocal cords, nerve damage, tumors or polyps in the back of the throat, or sometimes internal medical issues. After a thorough physical exam, your vet may recommend bloodwork and sedation to look closely at the back of your kitty's throat for any abnormalities.
