My dog has trouble controlling his bowels after surgery. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

As a result of rectal prolapse surgery when he was a puppy dude can't control his bowels completely and drops feces quite often. Sometimes it gets all over him and he has to be bathed sometimes 3 times a day. Is there something I can give him for that

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your dog dude. The treatment for fecal incontinence is directed at the condition. Being a post-operative change there is probably not a direct treatment for this. However, you can consider increasing the fiber in the diet. This can harden the stool and make it less possible to pass on its own. Good luck and have a great day!
