Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 20.5 lbs

My pet had surgery 2 days ago to remove an object in his stomach. His appetite is good, but he doesn't want to drink water. Is this normal?

Gizmo likely had IV fluids during his surgery so I wouldn't be concerned about him becoming dehydrated yet. If he is eating canned food after his surgery this is providing a lot of fluid as well. Most canned foods are at least 70% water. If he's eating a bland diet of canned food you can mix some water in with the food to maintain his hydration. As long as Gizmo is eating well and otherwise behaving normally I would not be concerned. If he doesn't start to drink some water by tomorrow I suggest giving your veterinarian a call. They may want to assess Gizmo's hydration and can give additional fluids if necessary. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I wish Gizmo a speedy recovery!
