Why is my puppy itching and biting her leg after flea exposure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | 4 months and 5 days old

Hi, blush is 4 months now and she got done with her last vaccination day before. Yesterday we took her to meet three big dogs, husky golden retriever and chow chow. They have ticks and fleas, but we came home and gave her a bath with flea wash and combed her. But since last night she's itching herself way too much and biting her leg. Doctor had given her fucidin ointment to apply and cetzine 2ml every day for 15 days. Please tell me if she's okay and do I need to take her to the vet again.

The Cetzine should actually help with the itching, so it's good to continue that while she is itching. Itchy skin is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. Given her recent history of being around flea-ridden dogs, t's good to check her for fleas and get treatment if needed. You can always treat for fleas by getting a product from your veterinarian or the pet store. Below is a link to a good article about fleas: https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas/ 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. I hope this helps you to identify the problem. If not, then it would be worth taking him to the vet. We can usually discover the cause quickly and provide the most effective treatment.
