Why does my puppy have a crusty, peeling, red spot on his paw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 25 days old | 3.5 lbs

My puppy has a crusty spot on the back of his front paw. His skin is peeling off and the skin underneath is red and irritated. No other spots on him, he lives inside and is a 5 month old Chiweenie.

He could have a bacterial skin infection, ringworm, or demodex. Have your vet look at the spot to determine the cause. Your vet can do a skin scrape or culture to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. If you can't take him to a vet than you could soak his paw in an warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps.
