My dog has a hard lump on his head near his ear. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 23 lbs

Just noticed our 5 yr old Lhasa apso has a lump on his head near his right ear. It is raised about half an inch, almost oblong in shape and at least an inch in length. It feels like a piece of wood. He's a difficult dog but managed to separate his fur but can't see anything, also his fur isn't that long at the moment as he was shaved right down in May. He doesn't seem bothered by it but growled when my husband tried to move it but it wasn't malleable. Worried it's under his skin.

It sounds like it could be a growth under his skin. A mass can be benign or malignant. I would have your vet look at it and do an aspirate to look at the cells under the microscope. Your vet will be able to tell you whether it needs to be surgically removed or just monitored closely. I hope this helps!
