My pit bulls are so itchy with skin issues. What are affordable solutions?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 68 lbs

Two pit bull terriers...they are itching all the time. We've changed food, give them Claritin and Benedryl, they are on full protection so no fleas. My male is the worse, he smells, chews his feet, and has inflamed skin with bumps at times. My blue nose gets polka dots of missing fur. I am at my wits end with these poor itchy pups. Have ordered special shampoos, etc., my vet suggests Apoquel and Royal Canin. I just can't afford that, it would cost me $300 p/mo. Any suggestions are appreciated!!

I can sense your frustration! It does sound like they have an underlying allergy. Dogs can be allergic to anything in their environment (pollens, weeds, trees, dust, etc), food proteins, or both. The smelly skin and swollen feet are secondary to that allergy. You need to find the source of the allergy. A food trial is easy but can be costly. However you need to compare it on a daily cost and not monthly. If you can't feed Royal Canin talk to your vet about other over the counter options- there may be something that you could try. You may also want to consider allergy testing with a blood sample. Also costly but every infection you treat is also costing money and testing could save you over time. I recommend wiping your dogs off after going outside to remove some environmental allergens and also omega 3,6,9s to improve the skin barrier. I hope this helps. Good luck and kisses to your furry kids!
