What is this growing, scabbing, hard bump on my dog? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 75 lbs

My dog has a scabbing hard bump on his left side/back area, and it started off small and has gotten a little bigger. His mood and appetite has been the same but I'm curious on what it might be, should I be alarmed? I have only found one, the rest of his body is clear. He is a 70-75lb pitbull and almost 2yrs old in September. I was thinking tick bite? But I have not found any ticks. It's been a week since I've noticed this unusual spot. What's on my baby?

Hi! This could be a benign or malgnant growth. Given his age and appearance, I think a benign growth or infection are more likly though you never know for sure until you have it tested. I recommend you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for a test called fine needle aspirate which is easy, quick and pain free and in most cases yields a diagnosis. In some cases a biopsy is needed. Having this information can help guide what the next step should be for him. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be just fine!
