Cat ear hematoma drained at home, what's the best aftercare now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs

My cat had a hematoma on his ear. I could not afford to take to the vet. I used a sterile blade and cut it open and drained. What do I need to do now

I am sorry to hear about Ducktape. Unfortunately I would strongly recommend a vet visit. You can research this site for ideas on affording veterinary care: http://m.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html The concern with your kitty is twofold. One, we don't know why the hematoma formed. There is usually some pathology inside the ear canal, such as ear mites or a bacteria or yeast infection, allergies, or a foreign object causing irritation. We need an examination to determine the cause of the scratching/shaking that resulted in the hematoma in order to stop it so the hematoma can heal. Two, now your cat has an open wound on its ear that is a site where bacteria can enter the body and cause infection. He probably needs to be on antibiotics. Until you can have him seen, he should be kept strictly indoors. Clean the wound with mild soap or Hibiclens soap (available at drug stores) and apply Bacitracin or Polysporin several times a day. If the area becomes warm to the touch, swollen/red again, or has discharge then a vet visit is needed ASAP.
