Poor Ms. Rumplstiltskin! An infection with ear mites will typically cause itching of the ears, head shaking, and black to brown ear discharge. Some kittens with ear mites can also develop secondary bacterial or yeast infections in their ears as a result of the mites and excessive scratching. While it is ideal to take her to the vet to determine if a bacterial or yeast infection is present in addition to ear mites, you can also try ear mite medication (Milbemite is one example; http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=15017 ) at home. If the discharge continues or worsens, then certainly take her to the vet. Remember that ear mites are quite contagious between cats and dogs, so keep a close eye on any other pets in your home. I hope that all goes well!
