Why does my dog have red, acne-like skin irritation around his mouth?

My dog has some acne like irritation around his mouth. What could it be?

That looks like an allergic reaction. I would give him TWO of the 25mg benadryl capsules and see if that helps to reduce these lesions by the morning. If not, then I would get him to your vet for an exam. Other possibilities: 1. Superficial dermatitis - skin inflammation/infection. 2. Autoimmune disorder like lupus. He would need some testing to figure that out if your vet thinks this may be the case. 3. Furunculosis - deep bacterial infection of the follicles. 4. Tumors - possible but not likely.
