Why does my dog suddenly have dry, itchy skin patches and raw spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs

Oakley is old English bulldog. He has never had any issues he is 2 years old .. we recently moved .. and he goes outside in our backyard but does not stay out there because he is not an outside dog. Well he has rough dry patches it feels like all over his back, but he is scratching them like crazy and maybe even biting at himself to the point where it looks like they're raw spots. I've attached a picture that I took as good as I could. Not sure what to get or what to do.

It looks like your dog has a skin infection, most likely caused by allergies or fleas. The allergies can be from a protein in his food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, etc. I would recommend taking Oakley in to see the vet so he can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up his skin. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control his allergies and itch like Atopica, Apoquel, or Cytopoint.
