My diabetic cat is on insulin. Can food help him stop needing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | 7 lbs

My cat is in Hills M.D. and insulin. Is there a commercial canned food that would be good as an alternative? He has been on insulin for 2 yrs, is there a chance he will not need it,

They do make several commercial canned foods that are good for diabetic cats. But it is unlikely they will make a difference since you have been on insulin for so long while already feeding a good diabetic diet. Most diabetics cats that go into remission do so sooner than 2 years. I would not recommend switching food if he is well controlled.

Most of the 9 Lives or Fancy Feast canned foods are acceptable. Choose one with a named protein source of animal origin that is grain free. Avoid foods with gravies or sauces as these are high in carbohydrates. Foods that come from the can looking like a hockey puck are best. The website www.felinediabetes.com is an excellent resource and has links to lists of canned diets that can be fed.
