Is it normal for my kitten to make popping sounds while sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | unneutered | 16 days old

Hello, I have taken in a kitten who was abandoned by the mother. He is about 15-20 days old and weighs 220 grams approximately. He is making a popping sound while sleeping. I thought he may be having difficulty breathing and since breathing through his mouth however he doesn't open his mouth while he makes this sound. Is this something I need to worry about ?

If Tweety is currently open mouth breathing, then that is not normal, and he needs to see a vet immediately. It is a sign of respiratory distress. If this sound is only made while he is sleeping, he could be snoring or dreaming, as if he was having trouble breathing, I would expect to see it while he was awake as well. To be safe, it's always a good idea to have him examined by a vet.
