When and how to safely move my cat and newborn kittens after birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old

Hi my cat is currently having kittens (second one just came out!) but she's chosen a very bad place (our sofa) to have them. We set her up a nesting box in our bedroom cupboard but she wasn't interested. Anyway I have two young children so of course she can't stay on the sofa, how and when is it safe for me to try and move her and the babies to the cupboard upstairs thank you :)

Given that Pippin is in the process of giving birth now, I would not move her until after she has given birth to all the kittens. You don't want to put any stress on her during this time period. Once all the kittens has been born and she has cleaned them and they have nursed at least once, then I would bring the box to Pippin and her kittens, put them in it, and then move them to a different spot.
