My dog's penis is red and crusty. Is it an infection? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 75 lbs

My bulldog can not reach to lick his penis, but the outer skin of the penis looks red and the hair looks crusty. When I wipe his penis with a hypoallergenic baby wipe the crust clears, but it still looks red and irritated. Should my dog be treated with antibiotics?

It is possible he could have bacteria or yeast growth on the skin. I would recommend a vet exam where they can do a skin cytology to check and see if either or both are present. They may prescribe oral medication or medicated shampoo or wipes depending on the severity.
