Why is my dog still sneezing and scratching after taking Benadryl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old

My dog has been sneezing excessively most of the day. I have given her bynedryl with a little improvement but she is still sneezing A LOT! She also has been scratching and chewing at herself lately.

Excessive sneezing can be seen as a result of allergies but also with respiratory infection, or a foreign object being inhaled and causing irritation (this is most common in cases where the sneezing was very sudden in onset, out of the blue!). If your dog has been scratching and chewing at herself then allergies or ectoparasites (fleas, mites) may be involved as well. I would recommend a visit to the veterinarian to try to determine the cause of her symptoms and get appropriate treatment. Benadryl will help with some allergy cases but often we may need prescription strength medications, at least initially to get the itch/allergy under control.
