Have Boomer examined by your veterinarian to rule out medical causes. Thyroid function should be checked (via blood work) as this may cause skin conditions. Use a good quality essential fatty acid supplement such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps. These come as capsules and are easily administered based on body weight. Do not bathe him more often than once every 4-6 weeks. This may dry out his skin. When you do bathe him, use an approved shampoo and a leave in conditioner. A humidifier in the home may help also, especially if you live in an arid region of the country.

They may need a medicated shampoo but definitely use a "soap free" formula for sensitive skin. Bathing strips the oil from the skin so try to limit it to a couple of baths a month. I would also make sure they are on a good quality dog food. Nutrition real makes a difference for skin health. A sensitive skin formula by Iams or science diet is great. Also consider adding fatty acid supplement to their diet. Derm Caps is one brand but there are many Made for dogs. Follow dosing on the package as it's by weight. Hope this helps. It can take up to three months after diet change or supplementation to notice much difference so don't give up too quickly.
