My dog has a new black lump on her nose. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 5 lbs

A black patch/growth has appeared just next to my dogs nose. It looks like the same texture as her nose or one of her pads on her paws but a little more risen. She's itching quite a bit more than usual but I wash her regularly and she has regular flea tablets from capstar. This patch doesn't seem to irritate her but has only developed over the past 3 days. It is also perfectly round, quite worried about what it might be!

Hello there. I am sorry Molly is having this issue. I must say that this is an unusual mass. I have not seen anything like that before. I think you should definitely have your vet check that out. My best guess would be a histiocytoma which is a benign tumor that is common in young dogs but it doesn't have the typical look of one. It would be easy enough for your vet to check it by doing an aspirate of it (putting a needle into the mass and getting some cells) and then putting the cells under a microscope to see what they are. I don't think it's an emergency but I would try to get it examined in the next week or so. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Molly. Dr. Amber
