Many dogs adopted from a shelter situation can develop separation anxiety issues. Some medications can be beneficial, but behavioral modification is also quite important. Try giving your dog a very small high value treat, say good bye, leave for 1-2 minutes and then come back and greet your dog. Repeat this activity over and over, but gradually lengthen the amount of time that you are gone. It will take weeks to months of conditioning, but your dog needs to learn that you will always come back home to him. Other things to try include using a calming pheromone collar or diffuser, such as Adaptil. You can also speak with your vet about trying different anxiety control medications, but some of these can take a few months to reach peak efficacy. Unfortunately, there is nothing available over the counter as an anxiety-control or sedative medication that is likely to be effective. I hope that all goes well!
