My degu is acting a little strange. I might be overreacting here but just want to make sure! I brought them a new mat to line their cage yesterday and one of them is lying very flat on it and won't sit normally or walk on it, he drags himself. He's fine off the mat on the other cage tiers. He's also barking occasionally in the middle of the night- I've woken up the last three nights to the sound, could something be causing this? He's 9 months old and lives with one male if that helps. Thank you

Degus may bark when stressed either by fighting/bullying or environmental factors. Degus can be very territorial. You will need to monitor your males as the get older. If the cage is not large enough, they may begin to fight for "territory" as they mature. Remove the mat to see if that makes a difference. Check Remi over for obvious injury or fight wounds. Degus like to dig and burrow. Provide deep enough substrate or a digging box to mimic the natural environment.
