Puppy dewormed, still seeing worms. When will it stop? Next steps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 6.5 lbs

Hello! Our two month old golden retriever puppy was administered his first dose of deworming this morning. When can we expect to stop seeing live worms in his stool? His next dose is scheduled for one week later. Should it be done sooner/later? Lastly, is there anything we can do in between doses to help him? Thank you Petco Pet Education Center and Dr. Lauren (previous question)!

Great questions! You should stop seeing worms in his feces in the next couple of days. Absolutely you should give him his new dose as scheduled, and I would not give it sooner or later than recommended. Sometimes you can see some GI upset when dogs are dewormed due to movement of the dead worms through their GI tract, and if Bourbon has an upset stomach, you can feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. I'm glad Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and Dr. Lauren were able to help you :-)
