My kitten has black specks, yellow wax, and itchy ears. Are these mites?

My kitten has small black specks and yellow wax in his ears. He scratches them and shakes his head. He is also biting fur off his tail. I am certain he does not have any fleas. Does this sound like ear mites? Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 2 days old | 8.3 lbs
