Why is my new kitten breathing fast and twitching in his sleep?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 23 days old | 10 lbs

A few days ago, a friend of mine handed me a kitten. Unfortunately, his mother died so I had to take him in and have been trying to raise him/ keep him healthy. Lately, I've noticed that his breathing is very fast. What I've also noticed is that he twitches in his sleep or just sleeps for a moment and then suddenly wakes up like he got scared or startled. What I'm most concerned about is his breathing. I don't know if it's normal for him to breathe that quick but I hope he's okay. That's all.

Oh my goodness Nino is SO CUTE! What a little love. I'm not sure if this breathing fast occurs while he is sleeping only or when he is awake. Kittens do dream, and they can experience breathing changes in response to their dreams. Dreams could also startle him awake suddenly and twitch. He could also be breathing fast due to play or running around a lot. Finally, there could be a medical cause behind this breathing fast such as a respiratory infection or heart problem. I would have him seen by a vet for a health check just to be safe if this fast breathing is occurring when he's awake. The vet can let you know for sure if this is something to be worried about or not.
