My allergic dog has gooey, crusty hip spots. Benadryl not working.

Hi! My dog has allergies (a very extensive range of them from dust to dairy to chicken) but we seemed to have the under control until she started getting these spots on her hips. The spots are gooey yet crusty and she won't stop licking them. We give her benadryl every morning and usually that helps but sometimes it doesn't. I am not sure how to help her when she gets these spots because anti-itch cream doesn't really help! Any thoughts?

As you said the problem is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas, infection or mites. It is always worthy in these cases, just to be on the safe side, to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage) and then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy.

Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics and shampoo like Malaseb or topical medication like Cortadvance). As well Apoquel is a new medication in the market that can control itch sign pretty well without having side effects. Please discuss it with your local veterinarian. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation (where you can post pictures ) if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
