Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | 4 years and 11 months old
Hi my labrador retriever is being treated for an allergy and its her first night on prednisone. I've noticed some panting before bed and her breathing whilst sleeping seems to be what I'd describe as quick and sharp. She's woken a couple of times and seems fine but when she goes back to sleep I notice the fast breathing. Is this a side effect of this drug?

Definitely, panting is a side effect of prednisone. However, the thing that concerns me a bit is that prednisone takes about 24 hours to reach therapeutic levels, so I would watch Jazz closely to be sure that no other concerning signs develop. Increased thirst, increased respiration, increased urination, and increased appetite are all common side effects of pred. I would not be too worried with this development, and hopefully your vet has prescribed a pretty short course so that she won't be on it long, and her allergies will quickly be under control.
