Why does my dog cough, gag, and stiffen up like choking on air?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Fiffy is about 7 years old, not sure as I found her in the street and took her in, and occasionally maybe 3-6 times a day she will cough or gag like if she's choking and she stiffens up like if she's trying to throw up but it sounds like she chokes on air or something what could be causing this ? It's pretty loud and scary but after its over she's totally fine

If it has been happening for more than 2 weeks, it's likely to be a chronic problem, it could be a heart condition, hearthworm, a chronic lung disease or a collapsed windpipe. i strongly recommend taking her to the vet to get that checked.
