Why does my senior cat have a recurring bald spot under her leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed

Hi, my domestic short hair cat has this spot with the hair missing. It comes and goes...always under one leg, either leg. I can put anything on it for fear of her licking it. I've been cleaning it with baking soda and warm water. My vet says it's not a hotspot, but that's how it looks. She's 17 years old...thank you if you can advise...Patty

Hair loss like in the picture can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Sofia seen by your veterinarian again to help determine the cause of the hair loss as soon as you can. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area (taken by a procedure known as a skin scraping) and examined under the microscope to determine what kind(s) of infection may be present and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. Good luck!
