I was exposed to dog scabies. Can I get it, and can my other pets?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I work at an animal shelter we got a puppy that turned out to have scabies. But right before I found that out I was sitting down trying to get the lose dry skin off of him. I changed my shirt but I couldn’t change pants. This happened Monday. Today I just started itching and got lil bumps on me. Could I have gotten scabie on me? I took a shower as soon as I got home and I have other dogs could they have made there way To my dogs. I know scabies live in the skin so Could I get them Easily on me

Scabies can be spread to people and it can be transmitted pretty easily - you should ask your physician about the bumps on your skin. If you have scabies it could be spread to your dogs as well - if they have crusty skin lesions or if they’re itchy you should see your vet. Some flea and tick medications like Nexgard and Bravecto are effective against mites so if your dogs are on one of these medications they may not be affected.
