My senior dog's hind legs are failing. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 15 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

15.5 yo male mini Dachshund neutered. Gradually (over a year) losing function of hind legs mostly RS. Knee down/paw angles outward about 30 degrees. No expression of pain. I am somewhat certain he is deaf otherwise cognition is good. No longer house broken. My vet doesn't show much interest and I think it is due to his age. She has not given a diagnosis. He is getting zero treatment. Should I find another vet? Ignore the problem? Put him down? Don't know what to do. Thnx in advance.

It sounds like he may be having some neurological issues and weakness with his hind legs. Although the issue may not be curable, I would recommend getting a second opinion as there may be some treatments that could help. If you have a veterinary neurologist in your area, you could schedule a consult and get a specialist's opinion.
