Itching and scratching is caused by a wide variety of reasons, ranging from infections, inflammatory processes, allergic processes, cancerous process, toxic process, behavioral problems, and a few others. As a result, a thorough history and physical exam would be required to better direct you to what is the appropriate course of action. If you live, in Houston be sure you are using a good product for flea / tick prevention as well as heartworm prevention. Also, feed a consistent high quality diet potentially free of chicken as this is the most common allergen. Medically speaking you can use over the counter anti-histamines for treatment of some types of itchiness like benadryl, claritin, zyrtec, etc. Please consult your local vet for the dose for these medications. If you are not having success and your dog is experiencing chronic discomfort, seek vet care and prescription strength medications.
