My dog bred, ultrasound negative, but showing signs. Is she pregnant?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

My dog was paired on Nov 2nd and 4th and then she was inseminated as well. I went with her to the vet to get an ultrasound last Friday and didn't know she had to pee before and the vet didn't see pups and told us to come back in 2 weeks. Her nipples are more swollen and stiff but didn't change color a lot. Could she still be pragnant? I feel like her belly is a tiny bit bigger but maybe that's just me hoping she's pragnant.

Hello. Yes, it is still possible that she is pregnant. It can sometimes be possible for your veterinarian to palpate your dog’s abdomen and feel the fetuses even if they aren’t seen on imaging studies. I would recommend that you have her checked again in a week to see if your vet- or a different vet- can feel the puppies with their hands or try the ultrasound again. Small breeds like a Papillions can sometimes only carry a small number of puppies (1,2,3 or 4 puppies typically) and it is a little harder to tell in the first few weeks if they are pregnant.
